"Seeing our region blossom with an identity that is built around Rhone varieties has been inexpressibly sweet.”
- John Alban
Owner & Winemaker
John Alban
A sip of Condrieu at 24 years old sparked John’s interest in Rhône varieties. After earning a Master’s degree in Enology from UC Davis, John traveled to France where he apprenticed everywhere from Beaujolais to Provence. It was during this time that all the information he had learned thus far indicated to him that Syrah, Grenache, Viognier, and Roussanne made sense to also be in California. From this point on, John brought it upon himself to bring these varieties to California, and eventually settled down in the Edna Valley where he pioneered the Rhône movement in the New world. In 1986, John started Alban Vineyards, the first American winery and vineyard established exclusively for Rhône varieties. John Alban is the Founding Director of Hospice du Rhône, the world’s largest international celebration of Rhône varieties.

About
Alban Vineyards
Alban Vineyards is the first American winery and vineyard established exclusively for Rhône varieties. Conceived at a time when there were virtually only two “flavors” of wine produced in the United States, they set out to introduce wine grapes that would offer a new world of possibilities. Pioneering Roussanne, Grenache Noir, and Viognier to go along with meticulously selected clones of Syrah; Alban Vineyards has guided consumers and producers to the enormous potential of “Rhônes” in California.
